400 Tsunami Victims Still at Camp

VIVAnews - As many as 400 families in Aceh who are the victims of the 2004 tsunami are not yet given proper facilities. They are still inhabiting the refugee camp. In fact, the Aceh and Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR Aceh & Nias) has already built 140 thousand homes.

"BRR has erected 140 thousand homes. 400 families are still living in the camp and they do not know when and where they will move in to any home," said BRR Aceh and Nias Head, Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, in Banda Aceh, April 15.

According to Mangkusubroto, many problems on housing have not yet been resolved by virtue of the cheating contractors. The BRR has filed a report about the said contractors to police.

"We have handed in their names to the police for further investigation," he said.

Mangkusubroto also said that there are still BRR's unfinished projects which will later be handed over to government of Aceh. The projects include the housing complex for the tsunami victims in Aceh and Simeuleu; bridge development on Kuala Besoe, Aceh Jaya and Aceh Tamiang Regency.

"There are so many projects that the BRR have been working on that it is normal if the unfinished projects are only six," he said.

He went on to say that, "The unfinished projects will be settled by the government of Aceh. The government is allocating around Rp 3.3 trillion of fund."

The BRR has closed down its head office in Lueng Bata, Banda Aceh. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will announce the agency by Friday, April 17.
