Creative Industry Contributes 6.3% of GDP

VIVAnews - Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu stated that creative industry had contributed 6.3 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). Therefore, the development in the creative industry will boost the growth of national economy.

According to the minister, 27 percent of the creative industry covers handicraft industry. "Creative industry involves 700,000 small and medium enterprises as well as 1.8 million workers," she said during the opening of the handicraft exhibition, INACRAFT 2009, in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 22.

This year, the creative industry can support the economic growth taking into account the nation's population of 230 million people, not to mention more than five percent of under-23-year-old group.

Pangestu thought that the INACRAFT boosts annual sales both during and after the exhibition. Handicraft exports have been rising from US$400 million to US$630 million since 2004. "I'm positive that this exhibition will help exports rise," she said.
