ASEAN to Hold Meeting on Swine Flu

VIVAnews - Ministers of Health from ASEAN countries are planning to hold a special meeting to discuss about a cooperation to handle the swine flu threat. Thailand is ready to host the meeting.

"ASEAN's Ministers of Health will be meeting soon. Thai Ministry of Public Health said they are ready to host the meeting in Bangkok, probably in early May", ASEAN General Secretary, Surin Pitsuwan, told VIVAnews on Wednesday, April 29, in a written statement.

Pitsuwan published the announcement after discussing with Thailand and Phillipines. He went on to say that Phillipines will preside the meeting. The meeting was suggested by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. He set forth that an emergency meeting to discuss the swine flu threat should be held.

The meeting, said Pitsuwan, will also aim at preparing the WHO's 62th annual meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 18 to 27, 2009. "The ASEAN's Ministers of Health can also explore the first East Asia's Ministers of Health meeting to discuss the issue", Surin said.

During a teleconference organised by the ASEAN's Headquarter in Jakarta, yesterday, ASEAN's health experts emphasized on the importance of the program's harmonisation and initiatives in the regions to respond over the spread of the swine flu.

Meanwhile, there has not been any bird flu case reports from Brunei, Phillipines, Singapore, and Vietnam. The Thai government, as quoted from Channel News Asia TV station, has distributed 5000 masks to 105 Thai citizens who are living in Mexico.
