Minister of Religious Affairs Reported to KPK
VIVAnews - Minister of Religious Affairs Muhammad Maftuh Basyuni was officially reported to Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Basyuni allegedly used endowment fund from pilgrimage fees of over Rp 534 million (US$49,000) for his own personal gain.
"Based on data that ICW acquired, Minister of Religious Affairs Muhammad Maftuh Basyuni received monthly operational allowance from treasurer of hajj pilgrimage fees," said member of ICW Working Committee Ade Irawan on Tuesday, Jan 6.
ICW suspected that Minister of Religious Affairs obtained monthly functional allowance of Rp 10 million (US$906). On 21 April 2005, Basyuni signed a receipt of operational allowance for March and April 2005. "A receipt numbered CZ 286497 was also signed by Director General of Islamic Public Management and Hajj Pilgrimage Taufik Kamil as well as BPIH treasurer Enin Yusuf Suparta," said Irawan.
ICW also noted that Basyuni received funds for official trips to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. He received US$7,500, US$7,500 and US$5,000 for each trip. "Total endowment fund received was Rp 534.353.772 (US$49,000)," said Irawan.
Member of ICW Emerson Yunto said that KPK is being requested to follow up on alleged fund manipulation. "We are also asking that KPK recommend the government to manage the endowment funds from the pilgrimage fees," said Yunto.
