Indonesia Supports Resolution on Iran

VIVAnews - Indonesia may have completed its task in the United Nations Security Council, but it has left its mark in the organization in fighting for a peaceful resolution of issues in Iran. Such was conveyed by Indonesian Vice Foreign Minister Triyono Wibowo on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

Wibowo said that the resolution should not have concentrated on sanctions. The United Nations must prioritize handling the Iran issue peacefully.

"The resolution should not only have to do with sanctioning, but also providing solution," said Wibowo. Indonesia had chosen to abstain regarding UN sanction on Iran. The decision was a refusal against the new resolution.

In addition to the five permanent members, the UN Security Council has 10 non-permanent members. Although Indonesia is no longer a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, it will still advocate international issues like world environment and global peace in the international forums. "We're now not only talking about security issues, but also poverty and environmental issues," said Wibowo.

Indonesia's non-permanent membership at the UN Security Council will end this month. Indonesia will be replaced by Japan to represent Asia in the United Nations.
