Munir's Murder Case

Muchdi Found Not Guilty

VIVAnews – In the hours leading to the year 2009, Muchdi Purwoprandjono, received a pleasant New Year’s present. The panel of judges of the South Jakarta District Court headed by Suharto declared the former Deputy V of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) not guilty in the murder of human rights activist Munir.

The verdict is far from what the prosecutors’ sought for Muchdi, which was a guilty conviction with 15 years of imprisonment for his role in the murder of human rights activist Munir.

“The accused is not proven legally and convincingly involved in the planning of Munir’s murder as the prosecutors charged,” said head of the judges’ panel, Suharto during the reading of the verdict at the South Jakarta District Court, Wednesday, Dec. 31.

The verdict was drowned by the cries of excitement and disappointment from supporters of both sides. Muchdi was asked by the judge to stand straight to hear the verdict but his expression was unclear.

The judges’ panel decided that since the prosecutors’ charges are not proven, Muchdi must be released from custody. According to the panel of judges, the prosecutors’ charge that Muchdi misused his authority as an officer of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) to plan Munir’s murder is not proven. “The prosecutors cannot prove the charge that the accused had instructed Polly to kill Munir,” said a member of the panel of judges.

Pollycarpus has been found guilty for giving Munir the poisoned drink that led to his death and is currently serving 20 years. And now, after weeks of trial, the judges have decided that the prosecutors have not proven Muchdi to be guilty in the murder of Munir, committed on 7 September 2004. Munir died on board an airplane on the way to Amsterdam from Jakarta. It was later discovered that the cause of death was poison.
