Decision on Natuna is Final

VIVAnews - The government still appoints Pertamina as the administrator of the Natuna D Alpha Block oil and gas field in Riau Islands. Director General of Oil and Gas, Evita H. Legowo, said that the government's decision on the Natuna Block was already final.

In other words, the government did not renew ExxonMobil's contract on the block. "Our decision [concerning ExxonMobil] is already final," said Legowo on Wednesday, Jan 14. "A press conference [regarding the decision] will be held," she said.

Legowo said that up until today, ExxonMobil has yet to submit data about the block to Pertamina. In fact, the contract had expired since 2005.

ExxonMobil had been contracted to work on the Natuna Block since 8 January 1980. In 1985, ExxonMobil's contract was renewed for 20 years, whereby ExxonMobil was permitted to perform exploration in the block until 2005.

However, during the period, the Natuna Block failed to produce under ExxonMobil management. In fact, ExxonMobil did not propose any field development program as was obligated by the production sharing contract (PSC). Therefore, based on the PSC, ExxonMobil's contract in the Natuna Block expired as of 9 January 2005.
