2009 Elections Overrules Anti-Corruption Law

VIVAnews - Member of Indonesian Corruption Watch, Emerson Yuntho, said that most of the members of the special committee for the Draft Bill on Anti-corruption Court at the House of Representatives (DPR) are prioritizing the 2009 Elections campaigns instead.

"Although DPR often stated that they will prioritize draft bill preparation, it is contrary to the fact," he said on Thursday, Jan 15.

According to Yuntho, concentration on elections has caused delays in budget preparation. Meanwhile, the special committee has 50 members.

Yuntho reminded that the enactment of the Draft Bill should fulfill the time limit requirement set by the Constitutional Court. "The due date is 19 December 2009," he said.

Yuntho said that DPR cannot blame the executive government for the delay. He said that the delay may lead to larger problem. "It may cause the Anti-corruption Court to stop functioning altogether," he said.

In addition, said Yuntho, DPR is involved in a conflict of interests with Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and Anti-corruption court. At least eight DPR members were investigated by KPK as regards corruption cases including Sarjan Taher, Yusuf Emir Faisal and Bulyan Royan. Five other suspects were found guilty: Saleh Djasit, Noor Adenan Razak, Al Amin Nasution, Hamka Tamdu and Anthony Zedra.

"If DPR wishes to eliminate KPK and Anti-corruption Court, it would be by not preparing the draft bill," said Yuntho.
