2009 Elections

Measuring the Coalitions

VIVAnews - 38 parties are involved in the 2009 parliamentary Elections. The struggle to gain the votes from 171 million of voters had taken place on April 9, 2009. Should there be no obstacles, the Elections Commission will announce the final result of the ballot counting by May 9, 2009.

However, some surveying agencies had announced their quick count updates. It resulted in the winning of the Democratic Party with 20 percent of votes, followed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) and the Functional Group (Golkar) Party with 14 percent of votes, consecutively. 35 other participants share the remaining votes.

The Justice and Prosperous Party (PKS) reaches 7.8 percent; the National Mandate Party (PAN) reaches 5.7 percent; the United Development Party (PPP) reaches 5.2 percent; the Greater Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party reaches 4.5 percent; the People's Conscience (Hanura) Party reaches 3.7 percent; and PKNU reaches 1.6 percent. No matter how, the above percentage is only the estimation made by such surveying agencies as LSI, Cirus and LP3ES.

A number of parties' leaders, like Head of Gerindra Board of Trustees Prabowo Subianto and Chairperson of Hanura Wiranto, said they did not believe the survey. Nonetheless, the percentage quite affects the parties' actions. PDIP, for instance, is beginning to gain forces from other parties to join in the coalition.

Several figures of political parties came to the residence of PDIP Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri including Abdurrahman Wahid, Prabowo Subianto, Wiranto, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, Rizal Ramli and Sutiyoso.

In addition to Rizal Ramli, he declares himself a presidential candidate supported by the Reform Block. Some parties signed the declaration of the Reform Block on February 25, 2009. Those parties include PBR, P3I, PNBK, PPRN, PKNU, PPDK, Pelopor Party, PMB, Sovereign Party, PDKI, PDS and United Indonesia Party.

It remains uncertain of whether or not they will fuse with PDIP.

However, some sources claimed that the parties that are in support if Yudhoyono are quite numerous including Golkar, PKS, PAN, PPP and PKB (the National Awakening Party).

The Democratic Party coalition will surely gain votes around 59.5 percent, having the result of quick count updates as the reference. The PDIP coalition will in fact acquire 40.5 percent if the non-Democratic Party coalition merges with the PDIP coaliation.
