VIVAnews- The non-partisan intellectual groups gathered to declare ‘The Caucus for Democratic Consolidation”. The caucus asked the intellectual groups not to follow the trend of rejecting the elections’ results.
“If the elections’ results are rejected, the constitutional process will be rejected as well”, LIPI’s political observer, Dewi Fortuna Anwar said at the Widya Graha building, LIPI, on Jalan Gatot Subroto No 10 Jakarta, on Monday 27 April 2009.
The caucus was held as a form of concern towards the quality of the elections’ performance which is far from the expectations. There have been many problems being questioned by the people and political parties that participated in the elections.
The most striking example would be the disorganized list of the final voters and the mixing up of ballots in some areas.
Those who were present in the event were Prof. Dr. Maswadi Rauf (UI), Prof. Dr. Syamsuddin Haris (LIPI), Drs. Andrinof Chaniago, MSi (THC), and Dr. J. Kristiadi. According to Maswadi Rauf, right now people are worried about the results and the process of the elections.
The worry could result in negative things such as the cancellation of the elections’ results, the rejection towards the elections, and the delay of the elections. “This will be dangerous for our democracy”, he said.
CSIS researcher, J Kristiadi, asked people to accept the elections’ results. He acknowledged that the elections were not satisfactory. But the acceptance of the results is to save the democracy.
“Clearly, the crisis was over when the elections were done. It can be improved in the future”, he said.
All of the speakers agreed to one thing. The early problem lies within the Election Commission. They assumed there was a mistake in the commissioner recruitment process. “Currently, most of the commissioners are professors but they are not election-specialized professors”, Andriof said.
From the discussion, a suggestion for the elected government and parliament to prepare a political system concept was formed. Basic improvements in the elections’ regulations and party system are needed.
