UNIFIL Commander Praised Indonesian Battalion

VIVAnews – The UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) Spanish Commander praised the Indonesian military contingent, Garuda Contingent, in Lebanon. In his opinion, the Indonesian Battalion has performed their duty in a professional manner.

“Hopefully we could meet again in another mission,” said the Eastern Sector Commander of UNIFIL, Brigadier General Juan Carlos Medina Fernandez, as quoted in a press release received by VIVAnews from the Information Officer of Garuda XXIII-C/UNIFIL Contingent, Lieutenant Colonel Arh Hari Mulyanto, on Monday, Dec. 15.

The Spanish general had just completed his tour of duty in Lebanon. Prior to leaving the country, Medina went to the Indonesian Battalion headquarters at UN POSN 7-1, in Adshit al Qusayr, to bid farewell.

The Garuda XXIII-C soldiers welcomed General Medina by singing songs and clapping hands. The Indobatt (Indonesian Battalion) soldiers always perform this unique ritual each time a UNIFIL high-ranking officer pays a visit to their camp.

Medina visited the Indonesian headquarters in Lebanon for 45 minutes and was accompanied by the Chief of Staff of Eastern Sector Headquarters, Colonel Salas.

Medina, who had been stationed in Lebanon for 4.5 months, is satisfied with the professionalism showed by the Indobatt soldiers while carrying out their duty under his command. Medina was quite impressed and praised the superior ability of the Garuda contingent, especially during the Indonesian Medal Parade last August. In his speech, he said he hoped to be reunited again in the future in another mission.

He also wished this newly arrived Indonesian contingent for a safe return without a single casualty and achieve success and happiness. He put great emphasis on this since the Spanish contingent under the same UNIFIL mission had lost several of its soldiers during the mission.

The Garuda XXIII-C Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel R. Haryono, explained to him that prior to leaving for Lebanon, his soldiers had undergone real-condition simulation training catered for their current mission. Their trainers were former member of Konga XXIII-A, who are familiar with the actual condition in Lebanon.

During the visit, as is customary for Garuda Contingent to do, they showed various footage such as “TNI in Brief” and “Indonesian Visit” to enhance Indonesia’s image in the international community.

The short visit was concluded with exchanging of souvenirs and taking of photographs at the Garuda field. “Farewell general, may you have a safe journey and be reunited with your family in happiness,” said Lieutenant Colonel Haryono to General Medina as he left the compounds.
