Israel-Palestine Conflict

Indonesia to Deploy Peace Troops

VIVAnews - The Indonesian government is ready to deploy peace troops to represent the United Nations if Israel and Palestine agree to cease fire.

"If there is cease fire, Indonesia will send its peace troops to supervise the cease fire to prevent more attacks from occurring in Palestine," said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Saturday, Jan 17.

Yudhoyono acknowledged that Palestine is coping with serious problems. Therefore, the government will send doctors, medicines and cash aid. The President has called the Palestinian Ambassador in Jakarta to make sure what kind of help is needed.

"Additional armaments, missiles or aerial bombarments are not required," said Yudhoyono. "Direct aid is needed to relieve the great suffering [of the Palestinians]," he added.

Therefore, according to Yudhoyono, such aid may symbolize another holy war. "It's not by sending jihadists," he said.

Politically speaking, the President stated that the communication with Middle East leaders is maintained. "Thank God the United Nations has organized an emergency meeting of UN General Assembly," he said.

According to Yudhoyono, the meeting was proposed by Indonesia through a speech by the Indonesian Ambassador before the United Nations prior to the issuance of the resolution. "Let the world hear the voices from other nations," said Yudhoyono.
