Currency Exchange Rate

Rupiah Hits 13,000/US$

VIVAnews - The Rupiah exchange rate touched Rp 13,000 againts the US dollar at 01.30 pm.

The devaluing global and regional currencies, the tumbled Wall Street as well as the decreasing regional stock price index were the main catalyst of the depreciated Rupiah exchange rate.

On 20 November, the Rupiah was closed at Rp 12,100 against the US dollar.

According to Bayu Fajar Aini, a foreign exchange dealer of a private bank in Jakarta, the plunging Rupiah was triggered by the devaluing such global currencies as the Yen, the Singaporean dollar and the Philippines Peso. "Our currency is then affected," he told VIVAnews in Jakarta, Nov. 21.

He went on to say that the weak closing trade at the Wall Street as well as the corrected opening session of regional markets today also triggered the depreciation of Rupiah .

In the opening trade today, the Rupiah was still at around Rp 12,000 against the US dollar.

He estimated that the Rupiah exchange rate today tends to decrease. The reason for this is that market players are still waiting Bank Indonesia's measure in maintaining the Rupiah. "Until the closing trade, the Rupiah will be around Rp 12,800 to Rp 13,000 against US dollar," said Bayu.
