Yudhoyono: Watch Out for Security Threats

VIVAnews – Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono instructed three high-ranking security officials to watch out for domestic threats. The instruction was directed at the Police, the State Intelligence Agency, and the Indonesian Military Forces.

The President’s instruction was issued in the wake of security intrusions in India and Thailand as well as terrorist threats around the world. “If there are [signs of] threatening seeds, it can be dealt with swiftly,” said Yudhoyono at the Presidential Palace, Istana Merdeka, Central Jakarta, Monday, Dec. 1.

The Presidential instruction was given after the President met with Indian President Pratibha Devisingh Patil. During the meeting, the two heads of states discussed the issue of how to deal with terrorism.

Yudhoyono hopes that the three relevant institutions can perform drills so as to sharpen their ability and preparation in facing all sorts of threats, whether domestic or foreign. “We must not be passive and take [the situation] lightly,” said Yudhoyono.

Furthermore, Yudhoyono continued, with the upcoming 2009 general elections the political situation will heat up and be more likely to create social tension. Everyone must exercise self-control and execute democracy in an orderly manner.

Aside from that, the global economic crisis that has affected all aspects of life will also increase the possibility of unrest due to job terminations or layoffs and uncontrolled demonstrations. “Let’s keep the situation stable,” said Yudhoyono.
