Internet Makes Tourism Easier

VIVAnews – The right choice of promotion media is necessary in the tourism industry.

According to the Secretary General of Bali’s Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI), Perry Markus, the tourism industry must be able to evaluate which type of media should be chosen to make the right promotion on the right target bearing in mind the areas of the industry that needs to be developed.

“In light of the promotional budget that has been cut by the government for various reasons, we have to be able to make the right choice or be selective in determining media promotion,” said Markus to VIVAnews, Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Media promotion has taken various forms, starting from conventional media such as brochures distribution, advertising in print media, as well as electronic media such as television and radio, inviting press from target countries, roadshow, and so on. And then there is the online media.

Markus views the online media development as being quite significant. In fact several tourism businesses, whether large or small hotels, now own their own websites.

“In fact, with the internet, communication has become cheaper. For example if a Singaporean tourist is having problems finding his destination, when arrives at the airport, he immediately makes reservation at hotel A. In two hours the hotel can pick him up at Ngurah Rai Airport,” he said.

Even more advance, all payments as well as reservation can be done via the internet using credit card. If such promotion continues to be carried out seriously with international servers, he said, online media will greatly contribute to the tourism industry.

However, Markus added, “If only a local server used, who would know about it or worse, the website would not be opened at all.”

Regardless, that does not mean that conventional media should be abandoned. According to Markus consumers still need conventional media such as brochures or they could go directly to the travel agent to ask for information.

“The reality is the consumer still need [conventional media]. This is the balance. Online media and conventional media have their own strengths and weaknesses. It would be better if the two can go together,” said Markus.
