In the survey involving 1,200 responders in 33 provinces, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono won by 42.9 percent against Megawati who gained 40.7 percent votes. The question posed to responders is as follows: "The Presidential Elections will be held in 2009. If the following presidential candidates participate in the elections, which one will you elect?"

Indonesian Survey Circle Executive Director Denny JA stated that in a democratic country, economic problems may cause a popular ruler not to be re-elected. "John McCain lost the elections because the US citizens were furious of the economic situation," said Denny on Friday, Dec 19.

According to Denny, the economic situation will play an important role in the 2009 elections. The reason for this is that the 2009 economic situation will be worse. "It will determine the winner of the Presidential Elections," he said.

"If the economy is improved, Yudhoyono will be more dominant. If the economy sinks further, Mega could win," said Denny.

Based on survey using multiple random sampling method and questionnaire, Yudhoyono was viewed as being excellent in handing issues on politics, security, law enactment and foreign affairs. Yudhoyono was deemed unsatisfactory with regard to the economy.
