Survey Institutes Refuse Being Regulated

VIVAnews - Research institutions refuse being prohibited to act as political consultants. Executive Director of Indobarometer, M. Qodari, believes that the research institutions should be left to their own devices and let the community assess the objectivity of their research results.

According to Qodari, differences in survey results that was earlier brought up by Chairman of the People's Conscience Party, Wiranto, are due to differences in methodology. "Let the research institutions compete. Presidential candidates or political parties may choose one research institution," said Qodari in a talk show on TVOne, Thursday evening, Jan. 1.

Erman Suparman, who represent the research institution Indonesian Survey Circle concurred with Qodari. According to him, a survey institution that also acts as a consultant is not a problem. "To learn about democracy, for institutions that play with them (the surveys), will eventually be eliminated by nature. What’s important is, we’ll just see the results," said Suparman.

However, Executive Director of the Center for Electoral Reform (Cetro) Hadar Nafis Gumay believes that research institutions need to be regulated. According to Gumay, there needs to be a rule that clearly states that the results of the survey are not official. Also, the General Election Commission must regulate the research institutions to reveal their investors.”
