Masyumi Withdrew from the Government

VIVAnews – 51 years ago today, on 9 January 1957, Masyumi, a major Islamic party in Indonesia, withdrew from Ali Sastroamijoyo II cabinet.

Ali Sastroamijoyo II cabinet was founded on 20 March 1956. The cabinet was a coalition of three major parties, including Masyumi, NU (Nahdhatul Ulama), and PNI (Indonesian National Party). The cabinet was chaired by Prime Minister Ali Sastroamijoyo, a representative from PNI.

Under the leadership of Ali Sastroamijoyo, Indonesia faced huge problems, such as separatism and anti-Chinese movements. Regional elites were disappointed at the government whom they considered to have ignored the local people’s interests. The cancellation of the Round Table Agreement gave a strong economic position to the Chinese since many Dutch business owners sold their enterprises to them to prevent confiscations by the government.

By late 1956, the relationship between Masyumi and the PNI began to deteriorate. Masyumi, whose supporters mostly came from outside Java, wanted to give more concessions to the local, while Soekarno and PNI preferred the central government to take even more control.

Since there was no agreement, Masyumi demanded the prime minister to return his mandate to the president. The prime minister, however, rejected the request by saying it would hurt the democracy and the parliamentary system. Thus, on 9 January 1957, Masyumi withdrew itself from the cabinet by recalling all of its ministers.

After the incident, the relationship between Masyumi and PNI as well as Soekarno began to worsen. A such, many Masyumi files and ranks later joined the the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PRRI) rebellion in 1958.

Two years later, Masyumi was banned by President Soekarno and several of its leaders were arrested.
