VIVAnews - Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) is carefully preparing a vice presidential candidate for Megawati Soekarnoputri as a strategy to compete against President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. PDIP is convinced that the 2009 Presidential Elections will be a battle ground only between Megawati and Yudhoyono.
"There will be a head-to-head competition between Megawati and Yudhoyono. Therefore, the vice presidential figure will be a decisive factor," said Head of PDIP Campaigning Team, Tjahjo Kumolo, on Thursday, Jan. 22.
PDIP is calculating the chances of couple Megawati-Hamengku Buwono X against the incumbent couple Yudhoyono-Kalla; Megawati-Wiranto against Yudhoyono-Hidayat Nur Wahid; Yudhoyono-Meutia Hatta or Yudhoyono-Sri Mulyani.
"We'll see [the calculation] on couple Megawati-Prabowo; Megawati-Hidayat Nur Wahid; Megawati-Sutiyoso; Megawati-Djoko Santoso; and Megawati-Sutanto," said Kumolo.
"We are curious of the details. What will be the winner's percentage? What will be the loser's percentage? That's the reason why we are slow and cautious in nominating the vice presidential candidate," said Tjahjo.
