House Less Updated on Human Rights Issues

VIVAnews - The defense of Human Rights in Indonesia is evaluated as not yet maximum. The commitment of the government and the legislative members to cease acts of violence violating Human Rights is also being questioned.

"I guess my colleagues in the House of Representatives (DPR) that have long been involved in politics are not updated on current Human Rights issues," said former National Human Rights Commission, Marzuki Darusman, on Wednesday, Feb 11.

Darusman, listed as member of Politics, Justice, Security and Foreign Affairs at the House of Representatives (DPR), keeps monitoring the progress of Human Rights defense in the country. Human rights abuses taking place in Indonesia, according to Darusman, cannot be handled administratively; instead, it should apply basic principles of politics.

"I do not represent the government. I am speaking, representing myself," said the former Attorney General. Darusman suggested that Human Rights and Women's National Commission pioneers the set up of the National Mechanism. "An ad hoc institution to form a National Mechanism to Prevent Maltreatment [is needed]," he said.
