VIVAnews - Head of the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) in Pekanbaru, Riau, Blucher Dologsaribu, said 35 hotspots still remain in some regencies in Riau especially Bengkalis Regency.
The wind blew from the North heading toward Pekanbaru and caused the smoke to accumulate in the air of Pekanbaru. "The wind blowing towards the airport is very slow and causes the smoke to hang above the airport. Therefore, we are forced to close down the airport," Dologsaribu told VIVAnews on Tuesday, Feb 17. "Although the smoke is still around the airport, it is quite secure for airplanes to go through [the smoke]."
Meanwhile, Sultan Syarif Kasim Airport, Pekanbaru, Riau, was reopened after one-hour closing due to the smoke. The airport was in operation at 10:49 am after the secure one-kilometer view distance resumed.
Five schedules of arrival were diverted.
