FAO Looks Into Rabies Outbreak in Bali

VIVAnews - Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will investigate the spreading of rabies virus in Bali Province, a region that has been declared rabies-free for years. FAO representative Elizabeth Miranda said that up until today, the first infectious source of the rabies virus in Bali is not yet revealed.

"We will trace the source of the rabies virus in Bali. Is [the outbreak] it deliberately created, or is it scientifically natural?" Miranda went on to say during a rabies vaccination session in Tuban, Kuta, Bali, Dec 21.

Miranda has yet to determine if the virus was carried by fishermen from Lombok, an endemic area of rabies.

With regard to handling rabies in Bali, Miranda stated that it is common to take such preventative measures, as is done in several Asian countries such as Philippines, Taiwan, India and China. "However, the most affected Asian country is India, where 52 people died from rabies," she said.

Meanwhile, rabies expert Dr. Dewa Dharma said that several regions must has to be kept under close supervision to avoid cats and monkeys from being infected by the virus. Sterilization from any dogs within the radius of 500 meters should be set up in the regions, especially at several temples such as Batu Madat, Uluwatu, Bali Clift and Seger.

Around 2,649 dogs have been vaccinated. It was targeted that until Sunday, Dec 21, the number of vaccinated pets would reach 4,000. Billions of rupiah will be needed to erase rabies in Bali, said Miranda.

FAO donated Rp 30 million (US$ 2,669), while the Australian government gave Rp 175 million (US$15,573).
