59 Judges Reported to Judicial Commission

VIVAnews - Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) reported 59 judges, who let go perpetrators of illegal logging, to the Judicial Commission. The anti-corruption watchdog is also requested to monitor every court session concerning cases of illegal logging.

Member of ICW Working Commission Emerson Yuntho revealed that, based on ICW analysis during 2005-2008, there were 205 illegal logging perpetrators that have been brought to court. Of the said amount, 137 perpetrators (66.8 percent) did not undergo further procedures in district and higher courts.

Moreover, only 44 of them (21.4 percent) were sentenced to prison for less than a year and 14 (6.8 percent) were sentenced to prison for between one and two years. "There are only 10 perpetrators that were sentenced to above two years in prison," said Emerson.

According to him, the data proves that government policies stipulating illegal logging are not yet fully implemented or upheld by judicial institutions.

"The many perpetrators of illegal logging that the court let go implicitly show that courts legalize illegal logging," said Emerson.

"The Judicial Commission should investigate the judges that let the perpetrators. This is done to serve as shock therapy," said Emerson.
