Bank Century Case

Two Foreign Nationals Named Suspects

VIVAnews - The Indonesian National Police has officially named two foreign nationals as suspects in the Bank Century case.

Both foreign nationals were commissioners and shareholders of Bank Century. One is Rafat Ali Rizvi, a British citizen of Pakistani descent, and Hesham al Warraq from Saudi Arabia. The Indonesian National Police believe they are both already outside the country.

“We don’t know their whereabouts. We will pursue them probably to their home countries, England and Saudi Arabia,” said head of Criminal and Investigation Department, Police Commissioner General Susno Duadji, Monday, Dec. 8.

Previously, the police had named three suspects in the Bank Century case: Commissioner Robert Tantular, former Treasury Director of Century, Laurence Kusuma, and President Director of Bank Century, Hermanus Hasan Muslim.

Robert Tantular, Rafat Ali Erizfi, and Hesham al Warraq were the three controlling shareholders of Bank Century. They owned Century through several business groups such as First Gulf Asia Holdings Ltd.

Rober Tantular was arrested on 27 November 2008. He was named suspect for having violated article 50 of Law No.10/1998. The article stipulates that an affiliated party who does not deliberately implement immediate measures needed to make sure that the bank conforms with the law’s provision as well as other regulations on bank, shall be sentenced to minimum three years of imprisonment and eight years maximum, as well as a fine of between Rp 5 billion (approx. US$413,000) and Rp 100 billion (approx. US$8.3 million).
