"If mutual fund industry can grow between 15 and 20 percent, that's already good," Head of the Association of Indonesia Mutual Fund Managers (APRDI) Abiprayadi Riyanto told VIVAnews on Wednesday, Dec 31.

According to Riyanto, fund managers will continue educating the public. Such efforts is hoped to stimulate investment in the product. "The key is continuous education on mutual funds," he said.

However, he said that the future of next year's mutual fund is yet to be forecasted. Investors are hoping that the market will improve, supported especially by the increase of domestic demand. "It won't be boosted by exports because they are estimated to fall," he said.

In 2008, based on data of Capital Market and Financial Institution Supervisory Board (Bapepam-LK), the value of net assets of mutual funds was down by 18.74 percent to Rp 74.35 trillion (US$6.678 billion) compared to 2007 with Rp 91,5 trillion (US$8.24 billion).

However, mutual fund units during 2008 increased by 14.78 percent from 53.59 billion to 61.51 billion.

"The global crisis that has affected [Indonesia] since early October 2008 did not result in the suspended mutual funds growth," said Bapepam-LK's Fuad Rahmany on Tuesday, Dec 30.

According to Rahmany, the number of mutual funds approved during the last three months amounted to 45.

This year, Bapepam-LK has approved 213 mutual funds consisting of 83 conventional mutual funds and 130 protected mutual funds. The stock market authorities have also approved 34 mutual funds of limited units and agreed to remove 118 mutual funds.

During the period, the number of mutual funds in Indonesia has also increased by 27.27 percent from 473 in late December of 2007 to 602 in 2008. "It is mostly concerned with fixed income which amounts to 134 mutual funds while protected ones reached 211," he said.
