KPK Focusing on Police and Courts

VIVAnews - In addition to monitoring regional budget, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) also prioritizes control over public services, KPK Deputy Head of Enforcement Division, Bibit Samad Riyanto, said Monday, Jan. 21. He emphasized that the data that Transparency International Indonesia publicized on people's perception over public services will be the grounds for its action.

Police is the institution that is most involved in bribery. "We will try to take action," said Riyanto. According to him, it is common that public services inside an institution, including police, will only resume if there is bribery. "It has been the fact," said Riyanto, who was also former police officer.

With regard to courts, Riyanto said the situation is parallel: "It's [the same]. The institutions of justice are also bribery-prone. However, they are good at discarding evidence," he said. Riyanto encouraged the public to report state officials who bribe the police.

According to Transparency International Indonesia, the police is ranked at the top position when it comes to bribery. Of 15 public institutions in the survey, 48 percent of the respondents agreed that the police is the institution most likely to receive bribes. Courts top the list when it comes to institution receiving largest sums of bribery.
