VIVAnews - The International Labour Organization (ILO) revised its previous prediction on world's additional unemployment for 2009 of 20 million to 50 million.
"Earlier, we had forecasted that additional unemployment will be only 20 million," said Deputy Director of ILO in Jakarta, Peter van Rooij on Thursday, Jan 29.
The number equals to 6.1 percent of world's unemployment rate, quite an increase compared to the percentage recorded in 2007 with 5.7 percent. "Today, expecting the worst scenario, we are predicting that the world's unemployment percentage will touch 7.1 percent which equals to an additional 30 million compared to the previous figure," he said.
In addition, the number of disadvantaged workers being incapable of earning of US$2 per day will increase by 1.4 billion, 45 percent of total employees in the world.
ILO also reported that 200 million workers mainly working in emerging countries are heading toward extreme poverty.
In addition, the number of workers who are welfare-prone due to lacking access to social security will sharply rise by 53 percent of total employees.
ILO based their prediction on the fact that the world is facing unemployment crisis. Poverty eradication showed insignificant progress. The middle class across the globe will weaken.
