Corruption of Tsunami Aid Funds

Aid Project’s Partner Sentenced to 7 Years

VIVAnews - The Corruption Court sentenced David K. Wiranata to seven years of imprisonment. Wiranata is the Director of PT Buntala Bersaudara, who was the partner of the West Java Tsunami Aid project.

"The defendant is found guilty for corruption," said head of the judges panel, Teguh Hariyanto, Jakarta, Wednesday, Feb. 11.

Wiranata also has to pay restitution to the state in the amount of Rp 1.12 billion (US$95,556) or serve 3 additional years and a fine of Rp 250 million (US$21,329) or serve additional 6 months.

The sentence is lighter than what the prosecution had sought, which was 10 years of imprisonment. The prosecution had also sought for restitution in the amount of Rp 6.48 billion. KPK had estimated that the loss to the state is up to Rp 8.1 billion (US$ 714,089).

The government had allocated Rp 26.5 billion (US$1.34 million) to help victims of tsunami in West Java in 2006. The aid was to be given to the fishermen in four regencies in West Java. PT Buntalan won the bid to execute the project. However, after the aid was distributed, fishermen from Ciamis, one of the regencies, complained that the boats that were given to them broke apart easily.

According to the prosecution, Wiranata had rigged the bidding process of partnership with the fishery officials in West Java.
