Elections Regulation

Quota for Women, House Members Undecided

VIVAnews - Women will have to fight for parliamentary seats more zealously to obtain a minimum of 30 percent in the House of Representatives (DPR) because the Elections Commission (KPU) agreed to exclude articles on women's quota in the regulation.

"KPU will not issue the article even though a Governmental Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perpu) has been issued," said KPU member I Gusti Putu Artha on Saturday, Feb 14.

According to him, after KPU looked into the matter further, there are no grounds to support the quota regulation. "Further examination shows that [the article] does not have strong grounds," he said.

Earlier, KPU has included articles which stated that for every three elected candidates of a political party in an electoral region, a woman should be nominated as a candidate. In order to strengthen the regulation, KPU had requested the President to issue a Governmental Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perpu).

However, up until today, the Perpu has yet to be issued. KPU was instead criticized by a number of political analysts and House members.
