Corruption Eradication

AGO and KPK are Not Against Each Other

VIVAnews – The Attorney General’s Office (AGO)  rejects allegations that it is engaged in unhealthy competition with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in efforts to eradicate the crime of corruption.

“Perhaps the problem is with the way statements are delivered by both institutions,” said AGO’s spokesperson Jasman Panjaitan to VIVAnews at TV One’s studio, Tuesday evening, Dec. 30.

According to Panjaitan, the two institutions are in fact cooperating, especially in the eradication of corruption. "What needs to be underlined is that the Commission’s job is to coordinate and supervise," added Panjaitan.

On 2 December 2008, Attorney General Hendarman Supandji compared the salaries and costs of performance of the AGO with that of KPK. According to Supandji, the performance costs and salaries at the AGO is rigid. Meanwhile, for KPK it is more flexible because the costs and salaries are based on performance (remuneration).

In addition, during the World Anti-corruption Day, the AGO claimed to have restored Rp 8 trillion and US$ 18 million of state money over four years. The AGO also said that KPK had only restored money to the state in the amount of Rp 476 billion.

The AGO’s data was denied by KPK. According to the Commission’s head, Antasari Azhar, the Commission has restored Rp 650 billion to the state during 2008.
