Japan Ready to Disburse 142 Billion Yen

VIVAnews - The central government assures that the construction of Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) in Jakarta can be completed by 2014. Japan is preparing to disburse loans for the project by early 2009.

"We are scheduled to sign a loan agreement with the government of Japan by February 2009," said Deputy Coordinating Minister for the Economy on Infrastructure Mesra Eza on Wednesday, Dec 24.

Total fund approved for the project, Eza said, amounts to 142 billion yen. The sum will be lent to the Jakarta administration. "The amount of loans would only be 58 percent of the total funds, while the remaining sum will be in the form of donation," Eza said.

The loan is in line with the government's policy in accelerating infrastructure development to enable the economic growth. In addition, new mass-transport-based vehicles to accommodate the crowded population in Jakarta is required.

MRT will be set up along the line connecting Lebak Bulus-Blok M and Dukuh Atas-Blok M. The construction is scheduled to begin by 2010. "The design is being prepared now. Then a procurement process will be carried out, to select the developer. Hopefully, it can already be in operation by 2014," Eza said.
