"If we can reduce the inflation rate from 11 percent to six percent, then the BI Rate would not remain at the same level, right?" Sri Mulyani said on Tuesday, Dec 30.

According to her, BI will adopt a monetary policy that is in accordance with the declining inflation rate.

For the time being, the BI Rate is still around 9.25 percent. BI has cut the rate by 0.25 percent in early December 2008.

As for the inflation rate, Sri Mulyani figured that 2008 yearly inflation would be at 11 percent. In addition to December, there will be a deflation due to decreases in premium and diesel fuel prices.

"The year-on-year inflation depends on deflation rate, around 11 percent or somewhat below that. It's not really satisfying. But we must work harder and better," he said.

BI observes that next year the government will be busy handling layoffs. Therefore, inflation rate would no longer be the main problem.
