Elephants Storm Farmers' Land

VIVAnews - Dozens of wild elephants at Way Kambas National Park, Lampung, stormed farmers' land in Tegal Yoso Village, Purbolinggo Subdistrict, East Lampung. Around 20 hectares of corn fields were ruined.

The angry elephants have been invading the land for the last three days. They entered Tegal Yoso Village on Tuesday night, Jan. 20.

Two nights earlier, according to Gio, an activist of NGO Wildlife Conservation Society, the elephants also 'attacked' two villages in two different subdistricts: Braja Village in Braja Selebah Subdistrict and Braja Asri Village in Way Jepara Subdistrict.

The four villages are at the borders of the National Park and are only separated by a damaged 5-meter dike which helps the elephants to cross through. "The dike has been unrepaired since 1991," Gio said.

The NGO and local farmers have managed to shoo the elephants away for short periods of time. But there has been no permanent solution offerred by the local authorities. Given the situation, the farmers are apparently in dismay.

During 2008, at least 50 hectares of farmer's land were crushed by wild elephants. Between August and December 2008, Wildlife Conservation Society notified that the elephants had disturbed the land 44 times in four subdistricts of East Lampung including Braja Selebah, Way Jepara, Purbolinggo and Way Bungur.
