Golkar Heading Towards Fractionalization

VIVAnews - Researcher from the Indonesian Center for Political Research Institute Science, Lili Romli, views that the main political party in Indonesia, Golkar (Functional Group) party, could experience fractionalization during the change in leadership. On average, said Romli, Golkar elites’ goals are short-term.

"Golkar has always experienced a split.  When the time comes for competition for power, the level of cohesion weakens,” said Romli in a conversation with VIVAnews, Thursday, Jan. 29.

Romli suggested that the issue regarding the transition of power be discussed after the Elections. If fractionalization happens before the Elections, Golkar’s political machine’s performance could become sluggish. “The chances for Golkar members to be hijacked by other parties become bigger,” she said.

Romli explained that post Reformation, Golkar is prone to fractionalization. Since the fall of the New Order, Golkar has lost a central figure that maintains the party’s cohesion. “All the elites are on equal grounds,” said Romli.

On the other hand, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) is showing a high level of cohesion because of the presence of the figure of Megawati Soekarnoputri. This is a big asset for PDIP in returning for the Legislative and Presidential Elections this year.
