Jakarta Starts Program to Reduce Flooding

VIVAnews - Jakarta Administration plans to reduce the flood in Jakarta by up to 75 percent by 2016 or seven years from present.

Jakarta's Governor, Fauzi Bowo, said that the government has planned a three-phased-program to reduce the flood in Jakarta. The first phase is 13 river-dredging projects, which will be financed by a loan from the World Bank and will start in April.

The dredging project will be funded by a US$150 million loan from the World Bank, with US$5 million for purchasing large dredging tools, and the rest for on-site operational expenses.

Meanwhile the east flood canal (KBT) and west flood canal (KBB) are planned to be operational by 2011. 35 percent of flood reduction will be achieved by the construction of a connection tunnel from KBB to KBT, dam and lake rehabilitation, and also the construction of Pluit Dam.

The river dredging and drainage program are also planned to be finished on 2011 along with the KBB and KBT construction. "The flood will be reduced by 40 percent. That's the first phase," said Fauzi Bowo, as quoted in the Jakarta Administration's official website on Thursday, Feb. 12.
