Campaigning for Sultan in East Indonesia

VIVAnews - After setting up a meeting in Palembang, South Sumatra, the supporters of Sultan Hamengku Buwono X will travel through Kalimantan and Sulawesi. The visit is aiming at improving the network of Hamengku Buwono's supporters to run for a Presidential candidate in the 2009 Elections.

"He wants to prove that he's eligible," Anton Lesiangi, chairperson of Functional Group (Golkar) Party Central Board told VIVAnews on Monday, March 2. Hamengku Buwono's supporters said every meeting will be held before the legislative elections take place on April 9.

After visiting the two provinces, they will go to Medan, North Sumatra. The pro-Sultan group is going to work on the support up until the second level. According to Lesiangi, the support needed to win the presidential candidate does not only come from the provincial board of the Regional Representatives (DPD). "But it also comes from regencies and municipalities," he said.

Golkar Chairperson Jusuf Kalla has also implemented the same measure. They held a meeting in Makassar, Southeast Sulawesi on Sunday, March 1.

During the National Meeting in October 2008, Golkar suggested that the presidential and vice presidential candidates are announced after the Elections in April take place. Therefore, presidential candidates are being selected from various regions.
