EU Accuses Indonesia of Subsidizing Steel

VIVAnews - The government has already anticipated that there will be friction between policies that each member country of World Trade Organization (WTO) would take and WTO's policies due to the global financial crisis.

Such was conveyed Industry Minister Fahmi Idris to VIVAnews at his office on Friday, Dec 12, in response to objection of European Union and India to Indonesia's incentive policy of Government Borne Value Added Tax on steel products. "They [European Union and India] view this as a subsidy policy," said Idris.

The European Union and the Indian government had earlier pressed their objection through their embassies. "They question the tax and consider the tax as being discriminatory because it is only applied on local materials," said Anshari Bukhari, Director General of Metal, Machineries and Multifarious Industries at the Department of Industry.

According to the said parties, Idris said, the government-borne value added tax over steel products is viewed as violating WTO's provisions because it discriminates imported products from local products.

During a meeting of heads of states in Peru, said Idris, it was pointed out that there will be policies colliding with WTO's policies. "No matter how you look at it, country leaders will priorotize growth of their own countries," he said.

Similar issue was brought forth by Deputy Head of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce Rachmat Gobel on Friday, Dec 12. "There's nothing to be afraid of because it is the government's obligation to save domestic industries," he said.

Meanwhile, Director General of Foreign Trade at the Department of Trade Diah Maulidia considered that the incentive policy does not oppose WTO's provisions. "It is only a misperception from two countries that considers this subsidy," he said.

Idris said that the government will solve the issue through further clarification at a meeting of heads of states.
