New Indonesia-Singapore Border Agreed

VIVAnews - The Indonesian and Singaporean governments have agreed to set new land and maritime boundaries. In the agreement, northern Nipa Island was approved as the new border.

"The western sector had already been agreed upon. It's the northern part of Nipa Island that is now agreed as the territorial boundary," said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday, Feb. 2.

It was a crucial agreement because the initial agreement on the territorial boundary between the two countries was last signed in 1973 and there had been no follow up meetings regarding the issue since then.

After going through tough discussions since 2005, the Indonesian and Singaporean governments finally agreed to choose Nipa Island as the territorial boundary in 2008."It's after some serious discussions because the process of negotiation is not easy," said Yudhoyono.

After the agreement, it is hoped that the economic development between Indonesia and Singapore in that region will continue to grow. The official agreement on the territorial boundary will be signed by the end of February 2009. "It will be represented by Foreign Minister," said Yudhoyono.

Nipa is an outer island of Indonesia situated at the Indonesia-Singapore border, and is part of Batam administration, Riau Islands. The island is located on the northwest of Sekupang Port, Batam Island, which is within sight during ferry crossing from Sekupang Port to Harbor Front, Singapore.
