Most Inmates in Kuala Lumpur Are Indonesians

VIVAnews - More than half of the inmates of the Kuala Lumpur prison are Indonesians, who are mostly migrant workers.

"When I was in Kuala Lumpur, I got informed that two third of the prisoners there are Indonesians," said State Minister of Women's Empowerment, Meutia Hatta, on Wednesday, March 11.

In addition, the number of Indonesian inmates increases every year. Nevertheless, Hatta did not know for sure the number and percentage of the increase. "We have a problem that needs to be solved immediately," she said.

According to Hatta, the high percentage of Indonesian inmates in Kuala Lumpur is not solely because of the migrant workers' mistake. One of the main causes is the loose rules in the recipient country.

"When migrant workers commit a mistake, they will be immediately punished. This is also a mistake from the recipient country," said the minister.

Therefore, Hatta asked all recipient countries to make a list of employers who violate labour's rights. "It is best that the outsourcing agency also list problematic employers," she added.
