US Applauds Indonesia's Progress on Democracy

VIVAnews - The United States praises the development of human rights exertion development and democratization in Indonesia for the last ten years. In addition, Indonesia is considered successful in putting an end to the sectarian conflict and war against terrorism.

Such was conveyed by US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, when giving a press conference together with her counterpart, Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirajuda at the Foreign Affairs Department on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

Clinton said that Indonesia has been going through a big transformation for the past ten years. She noted that the reformations, amongst other thing, are on Human Rights appreciation, democratization, putting an end to sectarian conflicts and making the country safer.

The US Secretary of State said that the conducive situation in Indonesia becomes an important factor to tighten the bilateral relationship with the United States. Both governments have agreed to make reciprocal actions for increasing welfare and democratization.

Therefore, the two governments agree to increase cooperation in several issues, namely climate changes, commerce, democracy, regional security, and anti-terrorism, said Clinton after an hour meeting with Wirajuda. Clinton added that these issues will also set the course for democracy and development.

Meanwhile, Wirajuda is eager to enhance the bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and the US. "Welfare and democracy will go hand in hand," he said.
