VIVAnews - PT Freeport Indonesia cancelled a massive layoff over its 3,000 employees. Freeport had previously stated that they would discuss the layoff plan with the Department of Manpower and Transmigration.
"Then I asked the President for a mediation," said Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Erman Suparno on Friday, March 20.
President Bambang Susilo Yudhoyono was reported to have permitted the minister to carry out a mediation for solving the problem. "I invited the management to have a discussion. They finally agreed that there will be no layoff," he explained further.
However, the company asked permission to repatriate 26 foreign employees. "[Layoff for] foreign workers is allowed," he said.
Suparno explained that up until today, Jakarta and West Java are two regions with the highest rate of layoff, aiming mostly at garment and electronics sectors.
As many as 16,650 workers in Jakarta and 7,097 employees in West Java and Banten have been subject to layoff.
Data from the department per 13 March 2009 showed that current layoff had affected 41,109 workers, an increase by 3,200 within only a week. More than 40 percent of the layoff is spread in South Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Jakarta, Banten, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Southeast Sulawesi, Maluku, Yogyakarta, and Papua.
Meanwhile, the number of temporarily layoff reaches 16,229 workers spreading around South Sumatra, Riau, Banten, Central Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and East Kalimantan.
