VIVAnews - During a meeting between the Indonesian Police and the Law Commission at the House of Representative (DPR), the underground gambling case that allegedly involved high-ranking police officers was the center of attention.
Indonesian Police Chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri stated that the police department is doing an internal crackdown, both preventative and repressive. One of the measures is taking action against police officers who are proven to be involved.
Hendarso stated that several officers have been proven to let gambling take place. “[This is] because the police officers knew directly or through report from the community, and yet failed to take police action in accordance to their authority,” he said, at Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday, Dec. 10.
With regard to the Riau gambling case, continued the Police Chief, the Indonesian Police Headquarters have decided the transfer of Pekanbaru City Police Chief, five middle-ranking officers, five non-commissioned officers from Riau Police Department. "So did the gambling in the Sultan Hotel. Four middle-ranking officers and one lower-ranked officer were sanctioned." he said.
Hendarso said that between January and November of 2008, 6,610 violators have been brought before the justice system for alleged misuse of authority and absence from duty.
As many as 178 police officers were brought to court concerning code of conduct violation. Indonesian Police Chief said that as many as 440 cases involving police officers have been brought before public court. "The cases include fraud, fornication, outrage and narcotics dealing," said Bambang Hendarso.
