VIVAnews – The Indonesian Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) stated that the decision to acquit former Deputy of State Intelligence Agency (BIN), Muchdi Purwoprajono sets a bad precedent for the enforcement of human rights in Indonesia.
Komnas HAM plans to hold a press conference at its office on Friday, 2 January, to convey its position on the matter. “If Muchdi is acquitted, that means Munir’s killer doesn’t exist right? Only the 'field executor,' Pollycarpus. So who was the brain behind it?” said Vice Head of Komnas HAM, Ridha Saleh, when contacted over the phone.
Pollycarpus is currently serving 20 years for giving Munir Said Thalib the poisoned drink that killed him aboard an airplane on the way to Amsterdam.
Saleh added that Komnas HAM will also criticize the court’s and the judges’ impartiality in deciding cases on human rights violations, especially in the murder of human rights activist, Munir. “This [decision] means that human rights advocates will be threatened," said Saleh.
Saleh asked for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s commitment in revealing those who were involved in Munir’s murder, which took place on 7 September 2004.
