VIVAnews – On Sunday morning, 4 January, West Papua was hit by a series of earthquake. Its capital took the biggest hit. After the 7.2 and 7.6 richter scale earthquakes hit, Manokwari is slowly recovering. Electricity facilities have returned to normal as of 6.00pm local time yesterday.

West Papua Governor Abraham Octavianus Atururi held a coordination meeting with the head of the District Police Department, Regional Military Commander, and other officials on Sunday, Jan. 4, to discuss emergency response steps.

According to report from the West Papua Province Government Disaster Command Post, one victim, Yolanda Mandoafi, 10 years old, died from being struck by wall debris. In addition, 3 people were reported to have sustained serious injuries, while 60 people experienced minor injuries.

Facility damages spread across Manokwari. The preliminary report of damages is as follows:

In the aftermath of the earthquakes, the situation in Manokwari seems to continue to become more conducive. Electricity has been back to normal since 6.00pm local time yesterday. Phone lines have also started functioning again.
