Teratai Prima Incident

Search Efforts Shift to Finding Wreckage

VIVAnews – Search and Rescue (SAR) team is starting to divide their tasks in the Teratai Prima incident, a shipwreck that occurred in Majene, West Sulawesi, last Monday, Jan. 11.

While in the past week, the SAR team focused on search for victims, today, January 19, the SAR team will also search for remnants of the ship.

Chairman of the SAR Mission Coordinator (SMC) Marine Colonel (P) Jaka Santosa, said that for the search for ship’s wreckage, the team has assigned Indonesian naval ship, KRI Pulau Rupat. "As of 04.00 Central Indonesian time, KRI Pulau Rupat has headed to the location where the ship sank," said Santosa, when contacted by VIVAnews, Monday, Jan 19.

Santosa added that KRI Pulau Rupat has sonar technology that can detect objects to the depth of over 500 meters. Thus, he hopes that the naval ship can identify the exact location of the shipwreck that carried more than 200 passengers.

"Hopefully it’s according to our initial estimation, that is, the position of 03.37.00 South and 118.47.00 East. And most importantly, (hopefully) the weather to supports this search," he added.

KRI Pulau Rupat will move to the western part of the Majene waters, or about 60 miles from the Parepare beach. The naval ship is planned to be in operation for 10 hours. It will return to Parepare around 2.00pm local time.

According to information gathered by VIVAnews, KRI Pulau Rupat is a mine-detecting ship owned by the Indonesian Military (TNI) Navy. KRI Pulau Rupat had run a similar operation when an Adam Air plane crashed on 1 January 2007.

Meanwhile, the search for victims which was supposed to end yesterday has been extended until tomorrow, Tuesday. Search efforts are being extended at the request of the victims’ families, who still hope that the SAR team can find their loved ones.

At least ten ships continue to search for victims, including three naval ships, and one ship belonging to the Air Force. Search from the air is also still being conducted by several helicopters and planes belonging to the Navy and the Air Force.
