VIVAnews – At least nine stupas (domes) at Borobudur were severely damaged when a radical Muslim group detonated nine bombs inside the temple on 21 January 1985. The New Order regime, who was caught by surprise, quickly blamed Islamic “militants” as the mastermind behind the bombing.
Weeks prior to the bombing, Indonesia faced growing violence after dozens were killed in clash with the military in late 1984 (the so-called Tanjung Priok incident). These violence included bomb blasts in two Bank Central Asia (BCA) branch offices in Jakarta, at a shopping mall in Tangerang, and at a Catholic Church in Malang.
Soon after the bombings, the police arrested three suspects involved in the event. According to the police, Abdulkadir Ali Alhabsyi and three of his colleagues planted nine TNT bombs inside the stupas.
During the trial, Abdulkadir revealed to the court that the bombing was triggered by his disappointment at the government who carelessly murdered dozens of Muslims during the Tanjung Priok incident.
After a short trial, Abdulkadir and one of his colleagues were each sentenced to 20 years in prison, while another suspect received 13 years prison term.
Later, in 1991, a blind Muslim cleric, Husein Ali Alhabsyi was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment for masterminding a series of bombings from 1984 to 1985 including the attack on Borobudur. Husein, however, denied such accusations, and blamed Ibrahim a.k.a. Muhammad Jawad, the person who prepared the bombs, as the main person behind the bombings.
On 23 March 1999, Husein was released from prison after President Habibie granted him a full pardon.
