Intellectual Property Rights Violation

VIVAnews - As many as 192 cases of infringement on intellectual property rights were committed between July and December 2008. Police handled 112 cases while Attorney General's Office (AGO) handled 80 cases.

"Those cases occurred on the second half of 2008," said Minister of Justice and Human Rights Andi Mattalata on Thursday, Jan 22. The number is obtained from a report from the National Team for Preventing Intellectual Property Rights Violation, second semester of 2008.

Of a total of 112 cases of infringement of intellectual property rights that the Indonesian Police handled, 106 cases are involved with copyrights violation; three cases are concerned with branding; and three other cases are on industrial design rights.

One of the issues regarding copyrights infringement, said Mattalata, is concerned with optical disc use, which reaches 122 cases. 217 people were named suspects.
 
Police has also confiscated 2.6 million discs consisting of 1.7 million DVDs, 371 thousand porn DVDs, 502 thousand discs of music and 4118 discs of pirated softwares. The police also seized 19 units of duplicating machines. 
 
Meanwhile, out of 80 cases that AGO handled, there are 61 cases of copyrights infringement, one case of patent rights infringement, two cases of industrial design rights and 15 cases of trademark infringement.
