Border Islands Prone to Terrorists

VIVAnews - Deputy Chief of North Sulawesi Chief Commissioner John Kalangi said three outer islands bordering with Philippines are prone to terroristic ideals. The government must find a solution for the islands of Marore, Mianga and Meranti.

For the time being, he said, Philippines is dealing with the separatist movement Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). "Several captured terrorists admitted to having been at the islands. Terrorists from South Philippines have been transiting at the islands," said Kalangi during a coordination meeting at the Indonesian Police HQs on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

He was afraid that the people inhabiting the islands will be affected by the terrorists' principles.

In addition, he viewed that the government must underscore the legitimation of the three islands even though the Philippine government has acknowledged the islands as part of Indonesian territory. "Politically, there is absolutely no problem. However, the islands are closer to Philippines than to Indonesia," he said.

Between 1980 and 1990, the Indonesian officials found that pictures of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos were glued to the walls around the islands instead of the pictures of former Indonesian President Soeharto.

In addition, Kalangi said several conflicts involving Indonesian officials and local people had occurred in the past. Unsatisfied with the offered solution, the local inhabitants instead flew the Philippines flag.

"This must be put into consideration so that the issue will not arise in the future," he said.
