Raid on Smokers in Jakarta

VIVAnews - The South Jakarta area is the first to undergo smoking raids, on Wednesday, 19 Nov. The raids are a program of the DKI (Special Territory) Jakarta regional government, in response to the Regional Regulation no. 2/2005 on air pollution control and Governor Regulation no. 75/2005 on non-smoking areas. After South Jakarta, other districts will get their turn.

“We don't call it raids,” stated the head of the Jakarta Citizens Forum (Fakta), Tigor Nainggolan when contacted by VIVAnews, Monday, 17 Nov. “We call it 'sympathetic test.' It will be conducted from 19 to 26 November 2008.” The raids themselves will involve NGOs, the BPLHD (the Regional Environment Management Body) of the special territory of Jakarta, and the community protection services. As many as 12 NGOs will be participating in the raids, including Fakta and the Tobacco-less Indonesian Women. But there will be no punishment yet during the sympathetic test, “We will merely warn them,” Tigor said.

According to the Governor of the Special Territory of Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo, the raids will start from the Provincial government office of the Special Region of Jakarta, “The rule makers cannot afford to break them.” Fauzi Bowo said. The officers in charge of the raids will be divided into two groups. The first group will raid the areas of Al-Azhar high school, Al-Azhar mosque dan the Pertamina hospital (RSPP), all in the Kebayoran Baru area of South Jakarta. The second group will raid the areas of blok M terminal, Blok M and the Victoria Building, which are also in the Kebayoran area of South Jakarta.

The raids are also to be done in public buses and the Transjakarta of five areas. 100 peace and disciplinary corps personnel have been assigned to the task. Citizens who are caught smoking, will be requested to exit the public transportation and explain why they were smoking.
 
The following is the list of areas from the Regional Environment Management Body of the Special Territory of Jakarta, that will be targeted in the next raids:

West Jakarta area will be at the Tarumanegara University, Ciputtra (Citrland) Hotel and Mall. Also the Grogol terminal, the HKBP church of petojo and the Royal Taruma hospital. The raids will be held on Thursday, 20th November 2008.

Central Jakarta will be at the Public Highschool no 1, Santa Ursula High School, Gambir train station, the Cathedral Church, the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital and Grand Indonesia. The raids will be on Monday 24th November 2008.

For North Jakarta, it will be at Kelapa Gading Mall, the AL-Azhar kelapa gading Higschool, and the Al-Musyawarah Mosque of Kelapa Gading. Tuesday, 25th November 2008.

For the East Jakarta operation, it will be held in the HKBP Church of Rawamangun and the Rawamangun terminal on Wednesday 26th November 2008.

Dozens are already caught in the raid at Blok M Terminal in South Jakarta, including drivers and passengers.
