VIVAnews - A train incident involving Putri Deli train on Monday, Dec 22, prior to its departure at Medan Train Station was seen as the impact of poor performance of outdated facilities belonging to the Indonesian State Railway Company (KAI).
North Sumatra Transportation and City Lay-Out observer Filianti Bangun told VIVAnews on Tuesday, Dec 23, that poor facilities were the cause of the incident. "Of the gathered data, KAI's facilities are commonly between 50 and 82 years of age," said Bangun.
For instance, the railway utilizes used steel imported from neighboring countries whose usage period is between 65 and 82 years against production year. The average usage period of steel tagged R25, R32 and R42 that have been commonly utilized range from 50 and 82 years.
In fact, based the Department of Transportation 2005 data, 27 percent of the steel used is 70 years old; 43 percent, 50-70 years; and 30 percent, 5-10 years.
In North Sumatra, the facilities are on average between 50 and 82 years of age. "Mainly, the facilities were purchased from India as the country renovated their railway facilities," she said.
In addition to railway steel, the operating locomotives - 301 and 304 - have been used for dozens of years.
The poor facilities have been connected to the fact that the state railway company seems to be more concerned with profits than prioritizing investment which aims at improving the facilities.
PT KAI should have clear tasks and functions. Based on the commanding department, it should be managed by State-Owned Enterprises Minister or fully controlled by the Department of Transportation.
